What Caravan Insurance Is
Caravan insurance is a general insurance product designed to cover eligible caravans against specified risks and events. Depending on the policy, it may respond to accidental damage, theft, fire, storm, flood, legal liability and certain costs after an insured event. The precise events, benefits and limits come from the Product Disclosure Statement, policy wording and your certificate of insurance.
Is It Compulsory?
Separate caravan insurance is generally not compulsory in Australia. Registration and compulsory third party arrangements differ between states and may deal with injury liability, but they do not automatically protect your caravan against loss or damage. Check the rules where the caravan is registered and any insurance cover that may apply through the towing vehicle.
Preparing for Quotes
Have the make, model, year, purchase price, current estimated value, registration, storage address and intended use available. List accessories, modifications and contents separately. Tell providers about off-road travel, permanent onsite use, hiring or unusual storage rather than assuming it is accepted.
Read More Than the Headline
The Product Disclosure Statement explains insured events, exclusions, limits, claims conditions and definitions. The Target Market Determination describes the class of customers for whom a product was designed, while your certificate of insurance records the cover and values applying to your policy. Check the relevant documents for the information you need.
