Start with the Same Information
Before requesting quotes, write down the caravan's make, model, year, value, storage location and intended use. Include fitted equipment, modifications, annexes and the belongings you want covered. Use the same information for every enquiry so differences in the answers do not create misleading price differences.
Describe how the caravan will actually be used. Touring holidays, occasional off-road travel, a caravan kept at a holiday park and permanent accommodation can raise different acceptance questions. Hiring or lending it to others also needs to be explained accurately.
The caravan insurance checklist helps you collect the details. Keep the quote date, reference, expiry date and proposed commencement date with each result.
Confirm the Product Fits the Caravan and Its Use
A quote is only useful if the proposed product accepts your vehicle and arrangements. Check whether it is for a touring caravan, camper trailer, onsite caravan or another type of RV. A provider offering caravan insurance does not necessarily accept every model or use.
Ask the provider to clarify anything the online form cannot capture, such as a custom annexe or a caravan kept on private land. If the initial price was based on incomplete details, obtain an updated quote before treating it as comparable.
Compare Cover Before Comparing the Premium
Read the quote, Product Disclosure Statement and any supplementary documents together. A summary table is a starting point; definitions, conditions and exclusions explain when a benefit applies.
| Area to compare | What to record for each quote |
|---|---|
| Value and settlement | Agreed or market value, the amount shown, accepted accessories and possible deductions after a total loss. |
| Events and exclusions | Relevant cover for collision, theft, storm, flood and other damage, plus exclusions that affect your use. |
| Contents and annexe | Whether cover is included or optional, overall limits, smaller item limits and outdoor-use conditions. |
| Roads and recovery | Accepted terrain, recovery before towing, transport limits and whether prior approval is required. |
| After-claim benefits | Accommodation, emergency repairs, storage and returning the caravan, including the conditions that trigger each benefit. |
| Claims arrangements | Repairer options, how repairs are authorised and any limits relevant to your caravan's construction or equipment. |
Use what caravan insurance covers for the broader questions and agreed versus market value for settlement differences. Record a policy page or section beside important answers so you can find the wording again.
Work Out Which Excesses Could Apply Together
Compare the basic excess and any selected, driver-related, off-road or special excesses. Ask which amounts can apply to the same incident. Two quotes with similar basic excesses may still require different contributions in a particular claim.
Check whether the selected excess is already included in the displayed total. Also ask when an excess may be waived or refunded. The excess guide explains these distinctions and provides worked examples.
Compare the Full Price on a Consistent Basis
Record the total payable over the policy period, including optional cover and any payment charges. If paying monthly, compare the full instalment total with the annual-payment option. Note whether a discount applies only to the first year or depends on another policy or membership.
Where the cover differs, label the difference instead of pretending the quotes are equivalent. For example, if one quote includes an annexe and another excludes it, ask for a revised quote or keep the exclusion clearly visible in the comparison. The lower price alone does not establish better value.
Our caravan insurance cost guide explains pricing factors. This page focuses on the process for comparing the quotes you receive, rather than predicting a premium.
Check the Situations That Matter to You
Choose two or three realistic situations from your own travel plans. An onsite owner might ask about storm damage to an erected annexe and accommodation while repairs take place. A remote traveller might ask about retrieving a damaged caravan from a track before an ordinary tow is possible.
Ask which sections of the policy apply, which limits or excesses are relevant and whether approval is needed before arranging work. These answers help explain a policy; they are not a guarantee that a future claim will be accepted. Keep any clarification with the documents and confirm required changes to the schedule.
Use the Quote Comparison Worksheet
The worksheet has space for three quotes, common vehicle details, cover differences and questions awaiting an answer. You can type into it or print a blank copy, then reuse it at renewal.
It does not obtain quotes, calculate a product ranking or select a policy. Mark an unanswered point as "not confirmed" rather than assuming cover is included. The worksheet explains how to print or save your completed comparison.
Resolve the Gaps Before Arranging Cover
Check that the final quote reflects the caravan, storage address, intended use, insured amount, excesses and options you agreed on. Review the policy's cancellation and cooling-off terms. If switching, confirm the replacement cover and its commencement time before cancelling the existing policy.
The provider directory can help you identify providers to contact. Listings are not rankings, and a comparison service may cover only part of the market. Keep the final documents and use the renewal checklist when the policy comes up for review.
Find Caravan Insurance Providers
Use the directory to make an enquiry list, then confirm eligibility and current terms directly with each provider.
